Freecamp along the banks of the Alta river, one of the best salmon rivers in Norway.
The freecamp site is a super place to stay when visiting the Alta-area. Located only 16km outside Alta centrum. Alta is considered the northernmost city in the world with a population surpassing 10.000 (pop. in 2017 was 15.094 people)
The rock carvings at Alta, dating from c. 4200 BC to 500 BC, are on the UNESCO list of World Heritage Sites. The carvings are made by the Komsa culture wich is named after the Komsa mountain in Alta municipality, where the first remains of this culture were discovered. The Alta river flowing at the site is one of the best salomn rivers in Norway, known for its large-sized salmon. In older days, salmon up to 33 kilograms were recorded, and fish up to 24 kilograms are still caught.
Fishing license in the river can be purchased from Alta Laksefiskeri Interessentskap, but the licenses are sold in a limited number. Application for a license must be submitted early in the year and all licenses are sold during a draw. When buying a license, one gets an exclusive right to a fishing spot, and it is only allowed to fish with one rod at a time.
